Effects of Studded Tires on Pavement Wear and Traffic Safety

چکیده
IN T R O D U C T IO N The question of whether the use of metal studs in automobile tires should be permitted as an aid to winter driving has been a highly controversial issue in Minnesota for a number of years. The state leg islature in biennial sessions had legalized their use on Minnesota roads and streets for six successive winters from October 1965 through May 1971. But during its last session, in 1971, the legislature did not renew the permissive legislation, thus reverting to the previous old law under which studs were prohibited. However, at the same time a new statute was enacted which granted to nonresidents of Minnesota the privilege of driving in the state with studs up to 30 days in a calendar year. The 1969 legislature had directed the Minnesota Commissioner of Highways to conduct a study of pavement wear and traffic safety as affected by studded tires and to report to the 1971 legislature to assist it in making a determination as to its source of action on future legis lation. The Minnesota Highway Department undertook extensive re search both with its own personnel and through contract agreements with outside agencies, and the results were reported to the legislature in May 1971. Preliminary descriptions of these research efforts were reported at the Purdue Road School in 1970. Additional results of research studies are reported below.

Effects of Studded Tires on Pavements in Minnesota
During the period of the past five winters in Minnesota, we have witnessed a startling increase in the amount of surface wear in the wheel tracks on many pavements—both bituminous and Portland cement concrete. Previously when similar pronounced surface abrasion occurred it was generally related to some deficiency such as unfavorable con struction conditions or materials or mixture design that ...
متن کامل[Particle numbers in classified sizes of roadside dust caused by studded tires in the air at different heights from the pavement surface].
Increased use of motor vehicles has produced various risks to human health due to air pollution by noxious gases, heavy metals and roadside dust. Since the late 1970s, the wide spread use of studded tires for cars has caused pavement wear, resulting in not only economic losses, but also roadside air pollution in cold and snowy regions in Japan. The most serious environmental problem in Sapporo,...
متن کاملProperties and toxicological effects of particles from the interaction between tyres, road pavement and winter traction material.
In regions where studded tyres and traction material are used during winter, e.g. the Nordic countries, northern part of USA, Canada, and Japan, mechanically generated particles from traffic are the main reason for high particle mass concentrations in busy street and road environments. In many Nordic municipalities the European environmental quality standard for inhalable particles (PM(10)) is ...
متن کاملThe effects of studded tires on fatal crashes with passenger cars and the benefits of electronic stability control (ESC) in Swedish winter driving.
This study set out to examine the effects of studded tires on fatal crashes on roads covered with ice or snow in Sweden and also to investigate the extra benefits of electronic stability control (ESC) during the winter months. Two different studies are presented in this paper. Both studies used an induced exposure approach. In the main study, 369 in-depth studies of fatal crashes with passenger...
متن کاملComparison of Geotextile Layers Effects on Static and Dynamic behavior of Pavement
One of the methods for the improvement of soil against the tensile stresses is using the artificial supplements in soil such as metal belts or nets, polymer materials and natural fibers. Technically this method is called the reinforced of soil. When a pavement is located on soft soil, great deformations can occur as a result of the crossing of traffic load in superstructure layers of the body....
